Arthur Vermeeren had a special night. Starting for the first time with Leipzig, the young Red Devil faced the club where he is still under contract, and suffered defeat at the very end of the match.

Arthur Vermeeren had a special night this Thursday. The young Red Devil was in the starting line-up for the first time for Leipzig, in the Champions League and against his employer, Atlético de Madrid.

Alongside Lois Openda and Antonio Nusa, also in the German starting eleven, Arthur Vermeeren saw his teammate Benjamin Sesko open the scoring after just five minutes, on a pass from Openda.

The Spaniards, who only brought Axel Witsel on in the 92nd minute, equalised after half an hour through Antoine Griezmann, before winning the match at the start of added time in the second half, through José Maria Gimenez.

A frustrating encounter for Arthur Vermeeren, who was not surprised by his starting place. “The coach said that I was training well, that he had confidence in me and that my chance would come. I was ready,” the 19-year-old told the German media after the encounter.

“The atmosphere at such a Champions League match is great. It was fun to see the fans and players again. Unfortunately, we are returning to Leipzig with a very bitter feeling,” concluded Vermeeren, credited with a contrasting performance on an individual level.
