Atlético Madrid faced RB Leipzig on the first day of the Champions League stage and won 2-1. Sesko (4th, 0-1), Antoine Griezmann (28th, 1-1) and José Maria Gimenez (90th, 2-1) were the scorers of the evening.
The Germans opened the scoring very early, with Sesko finishing off a shot from Openda that was pushed back by Jan Oblak (4th). Madrid equalised through Antoine Griezmann (28th) and then took the lead with José Maria Gimenez (90th). Axel Witsel came on in injury time for Madrid, while Lois Openda and Arthur Vermeeren started. The latter was replaced after an hour of play, and Maarten Vandevoort remained on the bench.
Barça lost 2-1 to Monaco. Early in the game, Eric Garcia was sent off after his goalkeeper made an error (11th minute). Monaco took advantage of this to open the scoring five minutes later, with Maghnes Akliouche beating Marc-André ter Stegen (16th minute). The Catalans still managed to equalise thanks to Lamine Yamal (28th minute). Monaco definitively took the lead again thanks to former Antwerp player George Ilenikhena (71st minute). On the Monaco side, Eliot Matazo did not leave the bench.
In the other games of the evening, Stade Brestois won 2-1 against Sturm Graz with goals from Hugo Magnetti (23rd) and Abdallah Sima (56th). In the meantime, Edmilson Fernandes had scored an own goal for Graz (45th+1). Dimitri Lavalée was a starter for the Austrian side and was sent off in the 88th.
Atalanta Bergamo and Arsenal drew 0-0, thanks in particular to a heroic double save by David Raya on a penalty by Mateo Retegui (51st). Charles De Ketelaere played 60 minutes for the Italians, while Leandro Trossard came on in the 58th for the Gunners.
