Former BBC star journalist Huw Edwards has been given a six-month suspended prison sentence by a British court for possession of child pornography videos and images, including sensitive material.

Edwards, who was found guilty, will have to complete a sex offender rehabilitation program and sign the sex offenders register for a minimum of seven years.

The judge in the case determined that Edwards' crimes were “extremely serious,” although he concluded that he posed no danger to minors. The sentence requires the former BBC journalist to undergo up to 25 rehabilitation sessions.

Edwards, 63, joined the BBC in 1984 and a decade later began presenting the 6pm news, which quickly became the most-watched news programme in the UK. In 2003, he moved to the 10pm programme, the BBC's prime viewing slot.

In the following years, he continued to gain notoriety, leading to his hosting the opening and closing broadcasts of the 2012 London Olympics. He was chosen to present the 2008 US election special, Prince William's wedding. Kate Middleton covered Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee and announced the monarch's death more than two years ago.
