The city of Marseille celebrates Marcel Pagnol – From 04/18/2024 to 02/28/2025 – Marseille

Marcel Pagnol, both through his history and his work, is linked to and Provence. Through his books and films, he shares his love for its landscapes, its people, its history and its traditions. The City of Marseille thus pays tribute to this popular and universal figure of Provence from April 2024 to February 2025, from the 50th anniversary of his death to the 130th anniversary of his birth.

Four main themes

In order to allow all Marseillaises to discover or rediscover the literary and cinematographic work of Marcel Pagnol, this tribute is divided into four main themes:

– Marseille by Marcel Pagnol
– The Kitchen of Marcel Pagnol
– The Language of Marcel Pagnol
– The Music of Marcel Pagnol

Completely free programming

This completely free program takes place in all municipal cultural facilities, from libraries to museums including, of course, the Château de la Buzine, as well as in public spaces. A specific program for Marseille students – film screenings, educational activities around the author’s literary work, Provençal meal inspired by the world of Marcel Pagnol, etc. is also offered to them from the start of the spring break.

And also: the City of Marseille celebrates, on the weekend of April 21, the composer Vincent Scotto

Furthermore, the City of Marseille is celebrating the composer Vincent Scotto on the weekend of April 21, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Vincent Scotto, born April 21, 1874 in Marseille, author of 4,000 songs and 60 operettas, also produced numerous film scores, including those for films by his friend Marcel Pagnol, who also entrusted him with of musical composition, the title role in Jofroi in 1933.

In 2024 and 2025, the City of Marseille highlights and shares
with all the Marseillaises and Marseillais, the legacy of this illustrious
writer and filmmaker, inestimable heritage of French culture and
Provençal.

CONFERENCE “THE FOUR-THIRDS OF MARCEL PAGNOL’S LANGUAGE: PROVENÇAL, MARSEILLAIS, FRENCH AND ACCENT”

Marcel Pagnol’s work can be approached in many ways, from aesthetics to sociology, from history to philosophy, from literary criticism to anthropology. From a linguistic point of view, behind a writing that is relatively classical or even “academic” in its form, we can find other levels, other registers, other varieties, other languages.

This conference will review the different means with which Marcel Pagnol was able to express a certain Provençal or Marseille identity, with different levels of interpretation.
