It is a decision that has created controversy in the middle of athletics. Transgender athlete Halba Diouf was deprived of the National Championships by her federation. The young woman of 21 confided in this contested decision and her choice of life in a long interview with the newspaper “L’Equipe”.
It is the misunderstanding that reigns on the side of Halba Diouf, when she learned that she could not participate in athletics competitions. For the young transgender woman, at the age of 21, she was one of the best sprinters in France and she was preparing to participate in the French Espoirs and Elite Championships, but the French Athletics Federation (FFA) withdrew her from competition.
On March 23, World Athletics (WA) decided to ban transgender women. A blow for Halba Diou. “I did not expect that at all. I was quite shocked and I still am. I consider it discrimination”says the young transgender woman in an interview with The Team, published on April 7. The latter does not understand this decision which has caused a lot of talk: “It’s relentless. I’m really angry, I don’t understand, even if I didn’t take it personally. I especially thought of other transgender women”she continues.
Born a man, Halba Diouf very quickly knew that she felt more like a woman. “I discovered my trans identity at the age of 7”explains the athlete, before continuing: “I was very quickly attracted to men.
