Meeting with Frêne, a fraternal electro-pop duo from Cantal who play it “A la cool”

The two brothers from Cantal unveil a new title before taking the stage at the Coopérative de Mai.

They are from Cantal, from Salsognac more precisely, they are brothers and make music together. Eliot and Noé from the group Frêne unveil their new title “To the cool” exclusively on RVA. If the group has already played in Parisian venues, this will be a great first in Auvergne. The electro-pop duo will perform for the first time at the Coopérative de Mai this Saturday, October 26. Their universe navigates between electronic music, French song and indie-pop for a dreamlike show.

Meeting with Eliot and Noé from the Frêne group.

X.GRUMEAU – RVA: Could you introduce us to your group?

NOAH – We are two brothers who set up Frêne in 2020. We are quite complementary in our tasks. I'm going to write the lyrics and melodies instead.

ELIOT – And me on the production, composition, technical part. Everything that's going to be, sound engineer and the live part. I also do programming, that is, making machines communicate with computers. Generally Noé has ideas, he searches and has fun. And during this time, I create textures and atmospheres.

X.GRUMEAU – RVA: What pushed you to start together?

NOAH – We both had a career in music, each on our own. We are six years apart, I am the oldest. It was during a birthday that we played live in front of friends. And it was that evening that we decided to start a duo. I had a few pieces, Eliot too and so it became Frêne.

X.GRUMEAU – RVA: Where does this name come from?

ELIOT – In fact it comes from our last name which translates “Frêne” in Auvergne and Occitan. We have a long name so we only kept half of it.

X.GRUMEAU – RVA: What is your style?

NOAH – We have an artist, Hervé, whom we admire a lot and who invented the term electronic song. It's French song mixed with electronic sounds.

“We are very keen on this aspect of writing to text in French.”

ELIOT – We have a fairly natural mix of our common influences. Our parents listened to a lot of Radiohead or Massive Attack. But also French song.

NOAH – We therefore wanted to make the big difference between the influences of French songs. But we didn't ask ourselves the question of what style of music we were going to make, it happened like that.

X.GRUMEAU – RVA: Do you feel that you have an Auvergne influence in your music?

ELIOT – There is something with physical roots that connects us to this earth. The relationship with volcanic rocks, plus we come from a family of stonecutters. We don't necessarily feel a musical influence, but rather in terms of energy.

“Our village of 15 inhabitants is a small setting next to our big cities where we live.”

X.GRUMEAU – RVA: Not too much pressure for your first Cooperative in May?

ELIOT – La Coopé is still a fairly legendary venue so no, it's a real pleasure to play in our homelands. We're pretty excited. We put a little pressure on ourselves, but it's because we want to give the best.

We toured quite a bit in pretty Parisian venues and at festivals. But it’s the first time we’re playing in a venue in Auvergne.. So it's official, Frêne is an electro-pop group from Auvergne (laugh).
