The situation in Valais improved during the night from Sunday to Monday. The level of the Rhône and other rivers continued to fall. Bad weather left one dead in Saas Grund and one missing in Binn.

On the ground this Monday morning, more than 700 firefighters are still engaged, with the support of the army and Civil Protection. A system which could be reinforced in the coming hours, we told RTS. Several regions are still flooded.

Traffic remains complicated

Traffic still remains complicated Monday morning. The A9 motorway is notably closed between Sion-Ouest and Sierre-Est, and should remain closed until Tuesday.

The Simplon pass is also inaccessible, for several more days.

Rail traffic has been restored between Sion and Sierre, but trains are still not running between Leuk and Gampel-Steg.


Several hundred people evacuated

A total of 425 people were evacuated in the canton of Valais, the majority in the Sierre-Chippis region. Several of them were unable to return home last night.

A great surge of solidarity was established. On social networks, announcements to offer housing to affected people have popped up everywhere.


Weather and infrastructure under surveillance

Over the next few days, the weather will continue to be closely monitored. Pumping operations will continue.

Another priority, certain infrastructures will have to be checked such as dikes and bridges.

Finally, the reconstruction could take several months. It will cost several tens of millions of francs, or even more.
