the very authoritarian president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, reacts to a statement by François Hollande

On BFMTV, the former president estimated Monday that the legalization of cannabis cannot lead to a reduction in trafficking but that an intervention by the army «in the neighborhoods” could not be a solution for all that. A sequence which made the strong man of El Salvador react.

On X, the self-proclaimed Salvadoran president “philosopher king”has reserved for French Internet users a surprise of which he has the secret. Champion of the fight against drug trafficking in El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele took the liberty of commenting on French news that is increasingly tormented by the issue of drug trafficking. Traffic mentioned by François Hollande, invited by BFMTV this Monday, November 4. The former president and now deputy believed that “the proposal to legalize cannabis would in no way lead to a drop in trafficking” but an intervention by the army “in the neighborhoods” could not be a solution. A reaction to the proposal of Macronist MP Karl Olive, who wishes to send soldiers to certain neighborhoods.

It was then that the Salvadoran president reacted to the president's reaction. “No, legalizing a crime does not reduce crime; it only moves the red line”followed Nayib Bukele. “People who commit crimes will start to exploit what is beyond the red line, and society will then be left with two problems: the massive use of what has just been legalized and the increase in “use of what remains close to the red line.”

“The only way to reduce crime is to take criminals off the streets”added the very authoritarian president. Triumphantly re-elected last February, Nayib Bulele leads a ruthless security policy that he imposed during his first term. In March 2022, whoever calls himself “the cool dictator” declared a state of emergency. A policy which allowed him to deploy the army in the Salvadoran streets, and to make arrests without an arrest warrant, in order to put an end to the actions of the gangs which were sowing terror in the country. The mass arrests have clearly had some effectiveness, with the number of homicides increasing from 87 per 100,000 in 2019, the year he came to power, to 2.41 in 2023.

Omnipresent on social networks, the president even made a final tweet this Monday, in response to a French Internet user who invited him to reign over the Élysée. “We will first have to annex El Salvador, as you did with Corsica”replied the Salvadoran president, who definitely seems to know well.
