After the election of Donald Trump, Jordan Bardella launched an offensive against the European Green Deal, nicknamed Green Deal, which brings together European Union policies intended to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“To exist in the face of Trump’s America”, Jordan Bardella wants to imitate the American president. While the newly elected new tenant of the White House has recorded by decree the end of the package of climate measures carried by Joe Biden, the president of the National Rally wants the European Union to also bury its “Green Deal”, its green deal. The offensive, launched in an interview published by the JDD this Thursday, January 23, has little chance of succeeding immediately.

“We must unlock all the constraints weighing on growth in and Europe. I therefore want the immediate suspension of the Green Deal,” assures Jordan Bardella.

“The inflation of standards that it promises, like the multiplication of constraints on growth that it underlies, will condemn our economy, from agriculture to the automobile industry, from artificial intelligence to our energy policy” , further develops the MEP.

Carbon neutrality in 2050

Launched by the European Commission in 2019 and adopted by a large majority by the European Parliament in 2020, the European Green Deal is a series of initiatives to enable the European Union to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions from 50 to 55% on average by 2030 compared to 1990 levels in order to achieve carbon neutrality.

In France, this regulatory package was one of the objects of criticism during recent farmers' anger. Christiane Lambert, former president of the FNSEA and current patron of Copa (an organization which brings together the main European agricultural unions), has denounced in the past, at European level, “a pile of environmental standards which threaten the viability of our farms”.

“I am convinced that there is a way to reconcile environmental protection and a production economy”, notably through the production of electricity using nuclear energy, defends Jordan Bardella.

Complicated to bury the Green Deal in the very short term

In January, then head of the list for the National Rally during the European election campaign, the far-right MEP indicated on BFMTV-RMC that he expected Gabriel Attal's government to “renounce the Green Deal”.

Despite the breakthrough of political movements against the European Green Deal in the European elections, its supporters remain in the majority in the European Parliament as well as within the European Commission and the heads of state of the Union. From France's point of view, the only option to prevent the Green Deal from continuing to be translated into French law would be for the RN to come to power.
