Signa founder René Benko arrested in his villa

The once billionaire real estate mogul René Benko was born in Austria taken into custody by the police. The accusation is: intentional impairment of creditors’ interests as part of the insolvency proceedings against Signa Holding GmbH as well as the risk of concealment and commission of crimes. An application for pre-trial detention has also already been made. At the same time, there were several house searches in Benko’s offices, in his holiday home in Lech and in his residence in Vienna.

New figures: mass deaths in Ukraine

On February 24th, the war in Ukraine enters its third year: To mark the deadline, various parties published figures on the number of soldiers who have died so far. The independent service UA Losses estimates that 63,584 Ukrainian soldiers died. The actual number of Ukrainian soldiers killed is “significantly higher”.

Research by this newspaper from February 2024 also suggests that well over 100,000 soldiers have probably been killed on the Ukrainian side alone.

Trump speaks at the WEF today

Donald Trump is speaking live at the World Economic Forum today. The top managers in Davos are conflicted about the new US president. For days, Davos has been talking about little else than Donald Trump: his inauguration, the first decisions, hopes, fears.

Trump is not the “Davos Man” of the elite who preach the advantages of an integrated global economy at the WEF. Trump’s “America First” policy is pretty much the opposite. What will be of particular interest will be what the US President says about the tariffs he has announced on imports from countries such as China, Mexico, Canada, but also the EU. Or about his ambitions with the AI industry, which has its big stage at the World Economic Forum.

Mega hurricane threatens England and Ireland with gusts of up to 180 km/h

The British Isles are facing the strongest winter storm of this season on Friday: the hurricane called Eowyn will first hit Ireland on Thursday evening and move on to Scotland by midday on Friday.

Hurricane gusts of up to 180 km/h must be expected on the Irish west coast. The British Meteorological Agency warns that significant damage to vegetation and infrastructure could occur.

Istogram of maximum wind gusts in km/h for January 24th shows a strong low pressure area near Ireland causing intense storms over the UK.

Eowyn has an indirect impact on the weather in Switzerland: storm winds are not to be feared in this country. However, the hurricane depression is pushing very mild air masses towards Central Europe on its southern edge. This will lead to foehn conditions in the Alpine region and spring-like, mild temperatures next weekend.
