Both Richmond and Columbia counties sheriff’s offices are urging residents to stay off the roads on Wednesday due to hazardous conditions from the snow.
“We are urging all residents and travelers to avoid roadways unless it is absolutely necessary for work or emergencies. The county is currently experiencing numerous traffic crashes, stalled vehicles, and hazardous road conditions. Please understand that non-emergency incidents, such as minor traffic crashes, are low priority as our personnel are focused on maintaining public safety, conducting proactive safety checks, and responding to emergencies,” RCSO said in a statement.
The following roads and closed in Richmond county:
- Peach Orchard Road (Phinizy Road to Tobacco Road) – Both directions closed due to ice.
- Deans Bridge Road at Meadowbrook Drive – Closed.
- Deans Bridge Road Southbound at Hilson Road – Closed.
- Barton Chapel Road at Old McDuffie Road – Detours required due to icy conditions; Roads and Bridges notified to install detour signs.
- Windsor Spring Road at Richmond Hill Road Northbound – Icy conditions reported
- Walton Way Ext/Crane Ferry Road – Ice on roadway; impassable.
- Wrightsboro Rd/Hickman Road – Requires salting.
- John C. Calhoun Expy/Washington Road – Impassable.
- Wrightsboro Road (Summerville to downtown) – Requires salting.
- 800 Stevens Creek Road – Ice on roadway.
- Belair Rd/Wrightsboro Road – Ice uphill; vehicles unable to ascend.
- Highland Ave./Hazel Street – Ice on roadway.
- Boy Scout Road at Lafayette Drive – Icy conditions.
- Washington Road/Beverly Heights Dr. – Ice on roadway.
For people who must be out on the roads, they are encouraged to use extreme caution, avoid the affected areas listed, reduce speed and increase distance between vehicles and keep vehicles stocked with emergency supplies..

In a Facebook post, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said multiple roads are iced over and there have been several accidents.
