On Tuesday, the French judiciary issued an arrest warrant against ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, on charges of complicity in committing war crimes, specifically in relation to the killing of a man holding dual French and Syrian citizenship in 2017.
Investigating judges suspect Assad of involvement in killings and attacks against civilians.
Le Parisien newspaper reported that the victim, aged 59, was killed as a result of the bombing of his house in the city of Daraa in southern Syria by Syrian army helicopters in June 2017.
The newspaper indicated, based on investigators, that the French judiciary suspects that Assad was the one who ordered the attack and provided the necessary logistical support for it.
-At that time, Syrian regime forces were trying to regain control of the city of Daraa from armed opposition factions.
In 2023, the French judiciary issued an arrest warrant against Bashar al-Assad as part of investigations related to chemical weapons attacks, especially the attack that targeted the Eastern Ghouta region near Damascus in August 2013.
