Mahsun Kırmızıgül, Haberturk He also connected to and said: We have just started to descend from Kartalkaya. We left the scene. Two days ago, my daughter and I came to Kartalkaya for the semester break. Last night around 5-6 o’clock the room’s phone started ringing, and sounds were coming from outside. We woke up to those sounds. We were 50 meters away from the hotel where the fire broke out. It was a terrible fire. People were worried about their lives. Ski instructors mobilized. People experienced terrifying moments. May God have mercy on those who lost their lives and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured. It is very sad to witness people’s helplessness in a dramatic atmosphere. Fire escape is very important in such hotels. Maybe if there had been there would have been fewer deaths. It is necessary to take precautions. We couldn’t stay because of this tragic incident. My daughter said, ‘Dad, let’s go.’ He was very upset too… State officials are there… Many houses are actually fire scenes. There is also this fact; Unfortunately, our country does not learn from such events. We experienced the Adapazarı-Gölcük earthquakes in 1999, and then the February 6 earthquakes. I stayed in Adıyaman and Hatay for 45 days. We need to dig a little deeper. Our state is very late in taking precautions. City planning is very important. There is a region of California in the USA. You can’t build concrete buildings there. You can only build wooden structures with concrete floors. Since it is a first-degree earthquake zone, people have taken precautions, but when we look at Turkey, there is a distorted urbanization. It shouldn’t be like this. An earthquake professor I met in Los Angeles gave a seminar in Istanbul three times. He told me; “Save your life, don’t live in Istanbul,” he said. This 90-year-old professor said, “I told your officials, ‘Please do not build a metro in Istanbul. Istanbul is a first-degree earthquake zone and will collapse into the city,’ but unfortunately, every time I came, no official listened to me.” I saw in Adıyaman, there is such a distorted urbanization… What would happen if all the construction machines in the world came…
