Barely inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump delivered an offensive inaugural speech, promising to restore American domination on the international scene while positioning himself as a “peacemaker”. He vowed to put America back at the center of global issues, hammering out his slogan “America first”.

“The legacy of which I will be most proud will be that of a peacemaker and a unifier,” said Donald Trump in a speech lasting around thirty minutes, while issuing declarations that risk fueling international tensions.

The Panama Canal at the heart of the demands

One of the most notable announcements of the speech concerns the desire to regain control of the Panama Canal, built by the United States and transferred to Panama in 1999. Describing this transfer as a “senseless gift”, Donald Trump accused Panama for not having respected the terms of the 1977 treaty concluded under the Carter administration.

“The objective of our agreement and the spirit of our treaty have been totally violated,” he declared, denouncing “unfair” taxes on American ships. “China operates the Panama Canal, and we didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama. And we will take it back,” he added.

For the “Gulf of America” and more the Gulf of Mexico

Faced with these comments, Panamanian President José Raul Mulino reacted firmly: “The canal belongs and will continue to belong to Panama. » He assured that his country would rely on international law to defend its sovereignty.

Donald Trump also announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America”, while unveiling drastic measures against immigration, in particular by the deployment of the army on the southern border with Mexico. “America will return to its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful and most respected nation on the planet,” he concluded, promising to restore fear and admiration for the United States.
