Break out the hot chocolate because brutally cold weather has moved into Northeast Ohio.

The National Weather Service is predicting a low temperature of 2 degrees today, with a wind chill value of minus 15 in northern Ohio.

It doesn’t get much better on Tuesday or Wednesday. It is expected to be minus 1 and minus 12 on Tuesday and Wednesday, with wind chill values down to minus 17 and minus 24, respectively.

All of northern Ohio is under a cold weather advisory from 1 a.m. today until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Will school be open during the cold weather?

It remains to be seen whether school districts will close in the Canton area. Akron Public Schools announced Sunday that it would be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

School closings will likely depend on how conditions will be in the morning, as this is when students may be walking to school or waiting for the bus.

Where are the warming centers in Canton?

Multiple warming centers will be open in Canton. The warming centers will operate as follows:

  1. Canton Memorial Civic Center at 1101 Market Ave. N. will be open from 8 p.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday. Enter through the north entrance. Food and water will be available.

  2. Edward “Peel” Coleman Community Center at 1400 Sherrick Road SE will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. from Monday to Wednesday. Enter through the west entrance. Food and water will be available.

  3. Crossroads United Methodist Church at 120 Cleveland Ave. SW will continue to open nightly from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Enter through the Cleveland Avenue entrance. Food and water will be available.

  4. Refuge of Hope at 715 Second St. NE will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 25. Enter through Door 4. Food and water will be available.

The Stark Area Regional Transit Agency will provide free transportation to the warming centers during regular operating hours. Riders should notify the SARTA drivers that they are going to a warming center to not pay the fee.

Riders can access SARTA from any regular bus stop to the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Avenue SE. To travel to Crossroads United Methodist Church, use route #102 or #105. Use route #110 to go to Edward “Peel” Coleman Community Center.
