Bundesliga: Virkus confident despite false start: “No broken leg”

Despite three defeats at the start of the new football year, Gladbach’s sports director Roland Virkus remains optimistic. «It’s not a broken leg. We said the first three games would be difficult games,” said Virkus after the 3-1 defeat in the Bundesliga duel at champions Bayer Leverkusen. «You are not satisfied with a defeat. But it’s about the way.”

The 58-year-old was particularly positive about his defensive performance despite zero points from the last three games. “If you do so well defensively against an absolute top opponent, you can actually be very happy. The problem is that every little mistake is punished against such a top team.” The team played “much better” defensively against the double winner than against Wolfsburg (1:5) and Bayern Munich (0:1).

Midfielder Robin Hack doesn’t despair either. “I think we are mentally strong and definitely have something up our sleeves so that we can turn things around and not fall into any depths,” said the 26-year-old.

“It’s unfortunate, of course, but we had it the same way in the first half of the season,” added Hack. “And now we’re looking forward and making sure we get points again in the next few games.” Borussia has its next chance next Saturday against VfL Bochum.
