World No. 3 Coco Gauff will lock horns with Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2025 on Tuesday, January 21. The American dropped her first set of the tournament in the fourth round against Belinda Bencic. However, she staged a quick turnaround to beat her 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Gauff previously beat Sofia Kenin, Jodie Burrage, and Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. She has advanced to the last eight here for the second year in a row, and for the second time in her career as well. Her current record at the venue stands at 16-5.
Badosa beat Wang Xiyu, Talia Gibson, and Marta Kostyuk to reach the fourth round, where she took on Olga Danilovic. After an easy first set, she was tested by her opponent in the second set but managed to subdue her for a 6-1, 7-6 (2) win.
The Spaniard has reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time in her career, and for the third time at a Major. Her record in Melbourne now stands at 10-5 following her recent wins.
Gauff and Badosa have an intense rivalry, which is currently tied at 3-3. The latter won their very first encounter en route to the Indian Wells Open title in 2021, and the former came out on top the next time they met at the Qatar Open 2022.
Badosa won their next two encounters in straight sets at the Silicon Valley Classic 2022 and the Madrid Open 2023. The tide has turned in Gauff’s favor since then, who beat her rival in three sets at last year’s Italian Open and China Open.
Gauff is yet to lose a match this year and is on a nine-match winning streak, and thus will be the favorite to win against Badosa. However, the latter is in pretty decent form herself, and it’s going to be a fight to the finish based on their recent matches. On that note, here are all the details on how to keep up with their upcoming contest:
