Real Madrid – Celta: summary, result and goals

He Real Madrid will play the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey after winning in 120 minutes at Celta de Vigo. The match, played at the Santiago Bernabéu, needed extra time to decide on the side of the locals. A night of many emotions from which the referee's controversies and Valverde's great goal are rescued: 5-2.

Celta started with personality in a Bernabéu that was far from full (64,764). At the beginning the public showed their anger with pitch for Tchouameni and timid whistles to Mendy, Vinicius and Ancelotti.

As the minutes passed, the white team took the initiative of the game. The stands were plugged with a cannon shot from the reviled Tchouameni and the field seemed to have a steeper slope for the Galician side than for the local side.

As was the case in Arabia, the most dangerous of the white players was Mbappe. The Frenchman did not stop moving and trying in the first half. It was the way to go if you wanted to break down a well-formed Celta defense.

Munuera Montero and the VAR make a mess at 1-0

In the 35th minute everything came to a head. Celta called for a penalty from Lunin on Swedberg and in that same play in which the referee saw nothing punishable, Mbappé broke the tie on the counterattack (37').

The Frenchman, who had his celebration suspended by the VAR for a few minutes, masterfully resolved against his defender and the goalkeeper. The indignation of the Galicians for the non-rectification of the video refereeing was capital from then on until the break arrived.

Vinicius scores the second after the restart

In the first stages of the restart, Real Madrid opened the gap with the rival. Mbappe put it in the space for Brahim to take the defenders' backs and give it to Vinicius to finish on goal (48'). Celta had come out ahead and that meant digging their own grave.

Giráldez moved the bench after a dangerous approach, which ended with a shot by Fran Beltrán. He opted for Pablo Durán and Sotelo in a stretch of the game in which the white attackers had everything going for them. Vinicius would think of everything but the goal when Starfelt took his Vaseline from under the sticks to the goalkeeper, Iván Villar (58').

At the other goal, Lunin would not be far behind by sending Sotelo's shot to a corner with a popcorn (69'). It was the first shot on goal for the visitors.

It was a warning from a Celta that did not want to settle. It was the 83rd minute when Bamba silenced the Bernabéu by taking advantage of a Camavinga error and score 1-2 (82′).

Celta forces extra time

The pulse became agony for Ancelotti's men. The ghosts of Arabia appeared suddenly and settled in the white coliseum when Asencio took Moriba ahead in the area. Penalty and goal by Marcos Alonso to tie the game and the tie (91'). Match to extra time.

Real Madrid – Celta: Asencio's penalty sends the game to extra time

The only extra time of all the round of 16 was going to take place at a Bernabéu in which more than one spectator was more than worried, both about the result and about how little sleep they were going to have when the alarm went off on Friday to go to the job.

To the greater despair of the white fans, Celta played its best game in the first half of extra time. The Galicians knew that anxiety was taking its toll on their rival and they sharpened the knife waiting for their opportunity.

Endrick's shot at the start of extra time

Endrick and Valverde decide

In the second half of extra time, when penalties were just around the corner, Endrick brought catharsis to the stands with a strong cross shot from the edge of the area, which marked the third goal of the game (107').

The party would become total with the fourth goalwork by Fede Valverde (111'). Just to see that shot from the Uruguayan to the squad from outside the area was worth spending the night in Chamartín. The fifth goal, scored by Endrick, was the icing on the cake. Quite a double backheel in the small area (119').

Applause with some haste when hearing the three final whistles and already thinking about the quarterfinals. On Monday, on RTVE, the draw starts at 1:00 p.m.
