Four days after their rout against Barça, the Madrilenians disposed of Celta Vigo this Thursday, at the Bernabeu, in the quarter-finals of the Spanish Cup.
It works for Real. But it was much harder and longer than expected… Humiliated by their best enemies Barcelona last Sunday (5-2), in the Spanish Super Cup, Kylian Mbappé and his teammates were back at it again this Thursday in the round of 16 of the Cup of the King, facing Vigo. With victory at stake (5-2 ap).
Real first worried their coach Carlo Ancelotti who hoped to be reassured. Without a solution, the Merengue relied on an individual exploit from their in-form man Kylian Mbappé to take the lead (37th). A controversial goal, since there was clearly a fault from Madrid goalkeeper Lunin at the start of the action on Swedberg and therefore a penalty before the flash counter attack from the former PSG player.
In the second period, Real showed a better face and quickly made the break thanks to Vinicius Junior (48th). The Brazilian was masterfully served by Kylian Mbappé. Without any real rebellion from Celta, apart from a powerful strike well repelled by Lunin (69th), Ancelotti logically rotated to preserve his stars, especially as Arda Güler thought to seal the victory for his team before seeing his goal refused for a position of offside to the millimeter (76th). In the space of 10 minutes, Madrid lost control of the match. Mbappé, helpless, noted on the bench the error in restarting his compatriot Camavinga allowing former Lille player Jonathan Bamba to reduce the score (83rd). Then Asencio's youthful error causing a penalty converted by specialist Marcos Alonso in the final moments (90+1).
The Madrilenians survive in overtime
Forced to go through extra time at the end of the night, Real was able to count on a bench provided to crack a solid Celta team. On two personal exploits, the locals successively scored two goals. Endrick first (108th), followed by Valverde (112th). For the beauty of the gesture, with success, the Brazilian nugget even offered himself a double in the last moments (120th) to close this success and make us forget yet another messy match for the reigning European champions.
