Juventus-Milan, how many refereeing controversies

Juventus-Milan has always been a challenge: one of the three classic levels of Serie A together with the Madonnina derby and Inter-Juve. Inevitably when two of the 3 great sisters of Italian football cross paths, tension rises and, sometimes, refereeing controversies also escalate. Let’s look at some controversial episodes or at least those that have generated controversy in the last 15 years.

Milan-Juventus, Muntari’s goal

The mother of all disputes between the Devil and the Lady dates back to February 25, 2012: 6th day of the return round, the lights of San Siro come on and that evening it is clear to everyone that a key challenge is taking place in the championship race (later won by the team by Antonio Conte who tore the tricolor from Ibrahimovic’s chest and companions). The Rossoneri took the lead with Nocerino after 14 minutes and ten minutes later they doubled the lead with Sulley Muntari. Actually no. The ball clearly goes beyond the goal line, Buffon in an attempt to save it pulls it out as it is now clearly inside, but the referee and linesman don’t see. It would have been 2-0 with Milan in control of the pitch. Instead we remain with the home team’s one-goal lead in the second half Juve found the equalizer with Matri (83rd minute). It must be said that a few minutes earlier the same Juventus center forward had had a goal disallowed while he was on the verge of offside, with the post-match slow-motion videos deeming his position regular.

Juventus-Milan and De Sciglio’s ‘hands’

Another Juventus-Milan full of poison was that of 2017: 2-1 for the Bianconeri with a penalty awarded to the Lady for a hand by Mattia De Sciglio in the 97th minutethen transformed by Dybala, who infuriated the Rossoneri team. The hosts had complained in the first half due to a contact in the area between Zapata and Dybala.

Milan-Juventus, Pjanic’s goal disallowed

Again in the 2016/17 season, but in the first round Milan won 1-0 with a great goal from Manuel Locatelli, very young at the time and started in those weeks by Vincenzo Montella. On that occasion, Juventus complained about Pjanic’s goal being canceled out on a free kick due to Bonucci’s offside.

Juventus-Milan, Tevez’s goal and the controversy over perspectives

Yellow in 2015: Juventus-Milan on 7 February ended 3-1 with a goal by Tevez which broke the deadlock after which there were protests due to an alleged offside. The Rossoneri club published a tweet that sparked a debate on the perspective of images, but the network ultimately proved to be in order.

Milan-Juventus, Calabria-Ronaldo penalty

Tensions also for an Italian Cup match, precisely on 13 February 2020: Pioli’s Milan leads 1-0 the first leg of the semi-final at San Siro, but in the 90th minute when the match seems to have been decided, Cristiano Ronaldo invents a nice overhead kick from a tight angle: the ball ends up on the wide arm of Davide Calabria who at that moment has his back turned. Penalty or no penalty? The VAR decides to call the referee back and in the end the penalty is awarded con CR7 which transforms it. In the return match at the Allianz Stadium it ended 0-0 and due to the away goal rule in force at the time, Juventus went through (then defeated on penalties by Gattuso’s Napoli).
