Club Brugge recorded a 2-1 victory over Genk on Wednesday evening and thus secured a good starting position for the return match. Yet it was not without controversy. In the 74th minute the match turned with a questionable penalty after an alleged foul on Ferran Jutglà.
“I don’t think it was a penalty,” said a disappointed Joris Kayembe afterwards. “But it is given, and that is why we lost,” quoted by RTBF.
Kayembe acknowledged that the match was evenly matched and was mainly decided by details. “Both teams played well and wanted the ball. A draw would have been fairer,” he said. Despite the disappointment, the Genk player remains optimistic about the chances in the return. “We know we are strong at home. We will wait for them and give everything.”
The tension for the return is palpable, with both teams dreaming of the double: winning both the cup and the league. “We can do this,” Kayembe emphasized. “We have shown here that we can handle them. At home we will do everything we can to get to the final.”
