Saturday January 11, 2025, the citizen collective Palestine Lebanon 48 hung the Palestinian flag on the pole of the war memorial, Place du Foirail in Mende. The police asked them to remove it.
During the last rally in support of Palestine, Saturday January 11, 2025 in Mende, members of the Palestine Lebanon 48 citizen collective hung the Palestinian flag on the flagpoles of the war memorial. An initiative that was not to the taste of the sub-prefect of Florac, Valérie Fuscien, who asked them, through the police, to remove the flag.
“The most perfect freedom of expression”
The demonstrators complied without causing difficulty, but several members today question the merits of this decision. “Is it really disrespectful towards our dead for France to demonstrate for peace? Demonstrating for peace and an immediate end to the fighting, is it not also paying tribute to them ?,” they wrote in a press release.
The sub-prefect does not have the same opinion. “They can very well fly the Palestinian flag. The problem is that the war memorial is not intended to be used as support for a political opinion, whatever it may be.“. She adds that the demonstration, which brought together around 70 people, also took place peacefully and “in the most perfect freedom of expression“.
