Tiktok plans to block its app in the USA from Sunday, writes the Reuters news agency, citing people familiar with the matter.
Background is a planned ban of the Chinese social media app in the USA. The ban is intended to reduce China’s influence and protect US data. The ban could come into force on Sunday unless the Supreme Court puts a stop to the procedure.
The US authorities’ planned ban would only affect new downloads of the app via the Apple and Google stores. But Tiktok plans to close access for all users in the United States, writes Reuters. When you open the app, a website with further information about the ban would be displayed.
App could be restored
Tiktok also plans to offer its users the opportunity to download their data. It is said that if the ban is later lifted, operations in the USA could be restored relatively quickly.
-Chinese parent company Bytedance did not respond to queries from Reuters. Bytedance is under pressure to sell its US assets by January 19, 2025 to avoid a nationwide ban.
