phenomenon, João Fonseca is the son of the co-founder of IP

player João Fonseca, 18 years old, stands out this week when he debuts at the Australian Open as the youngest player in this edition’s main draw. A curious fact about the athlete, who starts the dispute playing against the Russian Andrey Rublev this Tuesday (13), is that his father, Christiano Fonseca Filho, is known in the financial market.

The athlete surpassed Gustavo Kuerten (Guga) as the youngest Brazilian tennis player to compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam in the Open Era, repeating the disruptive behavior of his father, who, in 1988, cofundou a IP Capital Partnersthe first independent manager in Brazil.

In addition to being a partner and co-founder of the manager, Christiano, also known as “Crico”, currently works as an advisor to the manager, being responsible for defining and monitoring the company’s strategy and its remuneration policy, according to information from IP.

Discover the trajectory of ‘Crico’ at IP

Crico began working with investments in 1983 and, at the beginning of his career, he worked at Banco Boavista, Cash Corretora, Banco Fonte and Corretora Nacional. Upon seeing a rise in independent managers in the USA, he decided to leave the brokerage and found, together with Roberto Vinhaes, Investidor Profissional (IP), according to “Istoé”.

As the figure of the “independent manager” was not yet recognized at the time, the company was registered as a consultancy, becoming fund managers only in 1993, when it created IP Participações, according to information from “XP Expert”.

The company ended up training several prominent managers and analysts, who left to found their own assets, points out “XP Expert”. Among them are Bruno Levacov, from Atmos Capital; Marcelo Magalhães, from Tork Capital; and Pedro Chermont and Pedro Rudge, from Leblon Equities.

In addition to IP Participações, today the manager works with three other funds: the hedge fund IP Value Hedge; IP Previdência (pension version of IP Participações); and IP Atlas USD (investments in international companies and exposure to the dollar).
