Earlier today, HC Lugano informed that they are parting ways with head coach Luca Gianinazzi, assistants Krister Cantoni and Kalle Kaskinen, as well as team manager Hnat Domenichelli.
“This decision is painful for me, even on a personal level”, president Vicky Mantegazza states. “Several times this season, it seemed like we had the strength to bounce back. However, after the last defeat against Fribourg, the team no longer showed grit or character, and the situation deteriorated to the point of making this step inevitable.”
Gianinazzi became the Bianconeri’s head coach on October 8, 2022, replacing Chris McSorley. Prior to that, he was working in the youth department. The same goes for assistant Cantoni. Kaskinen, for his part, joined in 2023.
“In recent weeks, the entire club has focused all its energy and resources on supporting the coaching staff”, CEO Marco Werder is cited. “We were truly convinced that providing Luca and his assistants with support was a unique opportunity to change the routine and approach of HCL in the face of a results crisis. However, the team’s mental fragility is simply too apparent.”
Hnat Domenichelli started his job as team manager in 2019. He was once quoted saying that Gianinazzi was to be the last coach he would hire – it looks like his prophecy turned out to be true. The 48-year-old will stick around to support the club on an administrative level until a successor is found.
-“I am at peace and relieved to have found a solution that benefits Hockey Club Lugano”, the former team manager notes. “It has been a pleasure and an honor to be part of this club and work with everyone who has helped me. I wish them all the best for the future”
