With the acquisition, Delhaize wants to expand its network of points of sale, thus strengthening its position in the retail market. “Delhaize wants to make its expertise in food and fresh products available to Louis Delhaize,” says CEO of Delhaize Xavier Piesvaux. “We want to further develop the potential of Louis Delhaize stores and independent partner stores, together with the experienced employees.”
Delfood’s management team and employees will be retained, as will the contracts with the affiliated stores.
Delhaize and Delfood are now examining what steps they need to take to continue the acquisition process. Further details of the deal will not be disclosed until the takeover deal has been approved by the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA).
Although the 2 groups have a common family origin, they developed completely independently of each other. “With the acquisition, 2 companies from the same founding family come together again after an existence of more than 150 years,” says Piesvaux.
-Delhaize De Leeuw currently has 808 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, and the acquisition will add 325 more by the end of 2025.
