The former president of the Rhône-Alpes region, Anne-Marie Comparini, a UDF figure in , died on the night of January 4 to 5 in Lyon. His funeral will be held this January 11 from 3 p.m. in Saint-Jean Cathedral. Prime Minister François Bayrou attends the ceremony.

This Saturday, January 11, Prime Minister François Bayrou is going to Lyon to pay tribute to Anne-Marie Comparini, whose funeral will be held from 3 p.m. at Saint-Jean Cathedral.

Upon the announcement of the death of the former president of the Rhône-Alpes region, the head of government reacted on the social networkAnne-Marie Comparini, a woman of conscience and courage. Uncompromising, refusing to compromise with the National Front, she became president of the region for six years. We loved him and I loved him.”

François-Noël Buffet, Minister to the Minister of the Interior and Patrick Mignola, Minister of Relations with Parliament, will also be present to attend the funeral of this UDF figure. The centrist family is in mourning.

Centrist figure

“Our country loses a woman of honor and values”, also reacted Patrick Mignola, Minister of Relations with Parliament, former Member of Parliament for Savoie and former vice-president of the region. Elected for the first time in 1986 to the Rhône-Alpes regional council (which would become Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes with the 2015 merger), Anne-Marie Comparini was regularly re-elected until taking over its presidency in 1999. She was then elected with the votes of the left and the UDF elected officials who withdrew their support from Charles Millon after he accepted the votes of the National Front in 1998. Anne-Marie Comparini, holds the position of president of the Rhône- Alps from 1999 to 2004. Candidate for succession in 2004 under the UDF-UMP label, she failed against the socialist Jean-Jack Queyranne.

Member of Parliament for Rhône since 2002, she is running in the 2007 legislative elections under the union label UDF and Modem, a brand new formation from the center founded by current Prime Minister François Bayrou. But she was beaten in the first round. Considered to be a candidate for mayor of Lyon for François Bayrou’s party, she however announced her withdrawal from politics after the 2007 legislative elections.

If Anne-Marie Comparini was a loyal supporter of MoDem president François Bayrou, she took her first steps in politics with another political figure: Raymond Barre. She served as parliamentary assistant to the former Prime Minister from 1978 to 2001, ex-MP for Rhône. She was also his deputy for city and university policy at Lyon town hall, when Raymond Barre took the reins of the municipality, between 1995 and 2001.

Originally from , she died at the age of 77 on the night of January 4 to 5 at the Édouard Herriot hospital in Lyon.
