For the first time this winter, Météo France will place several departments of the country on “severe cold” alert. Who will be affected?
If France has already been faced with multiple vigilance since the beginning of the year, one was missing this winter: the severe cold alert. It will be triggered by Météo France, this Sunday January 12, 2025.
Eight departments concerned
This yellow “very cold” vigilance will be activated in eight departments of the country. And Occitanie will not be spared, since two of its territories are part of it. Here are the sectors mentioned by forecasters:
- Doubs
- Loire
- Haute-Loire
- Cantal
- Corrèze
- Hollow
- Aveyron
- Lozere
In all departments, it will be triggered from midnight (except in the Doubswhere its activation is scheduled for 3 a.m. this Sunday) and should last, at a minimum, 24 hours.
Activation, signification…
Météo France explains, first, that the criteria for this extreme cold vigilance “take into account the climate of each regionand require significantly lower values seasonal norms for the region concerned”. And then reveals what a yellow alert corresponds to for this phenomenon.
Indeed, this can “correspond to a situation constituting a danger for precarious populationshomeless or isolated, due to their living or working conditions. It may be a cold peak, that is to say a short-term cold spell (1 to 2 days), or an episode persistent cold“.
Prudence
Finally, in its bulletin, Météo France calls for caution, recalling that this “great cold is decreasing, often insidiously, the body’s resistance capabilities. It can lead to hypothermia or cause frostbite or even frostbite.”
