First the dry spell before the winter break, now the unrest surrounding Omar Marmoush: Eintracht is longing for a sense of success at the start of the year. The most important thing about the game.
After a mini-winter break, the Bundesliga is starting again: At the start of the remaining round, Eintracht Frankfurt will be visiting newly promoted FC St. Pauli on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).
A dry spell right before the winter break, a disappointing test match at Mainz 05 and now the unrest surrounding a possible transfer from Omar Marmoush to Manchester City – the mood at Eintracht Frankfurt is already clearly improving at the beginning of the year. A win at the start of the remaining round would bring some calm and also keep Frankfurt in third place in the table. “Recently the results have been lacking,” complained coach Dino Toppmöller. “We have to focus on defensive work. We’re doing really well going forward.”

As a promoted team, FC St. Pauli is currently on target – but nothing more. 14 points from 15 games mean 14th place, but a reassuring lead looks different. Added to this is the weakness at home: out of seven games at Millerntor, the Kiezkickers only won one and only scored three home goals. It should stay that way if Eintracht has its way.
The Frankfurters are missing Aurèle Amenda injured, but otherwise coach Dino Toppmöller has a lot of choice. Tuta is also back in training and “an option for partial use”. It will be decided at short notice whether Jean-Mattéo Bahoya will be in the squad a few days after his nose operation.
This is how St. Pauli could play: Vasilj – Wahl, Smith, Nemeth – Saliakas, Irvine, Boukhalfa, Treu – Afolayan, Eggestein, Guilavogui
Dino Topmöller: “St. Pauli found it more difficult at the beginning of the season, but performed very well in many games. With the 1-0 win in Stuttgart, they said goodbye to the winter break with an exclamation mark. It will be a great challenge in a great stadium.”
Alexander Blessin: “It’s a very interesting opponent who hasn’t quite managed to get on the pitch in the last two years despite having a really good squad. They didn’t quite manage to act as a team. They’ve managed that now, they have that too “We signed the right players who, in addition to individual quality, also brought in mentality and community. They have a lot of very fast players and are one of the fastest teams in the league.”
If Marmoush really leaves Eintracht, Hugo Ekitiké should come into focus even more. The highly gifted attacker has so far been in the shadow of the Egyptian, but has repeatedly shown his skills. He can and should now show that he is more than just the superstar’s sidekick. The adjustment period – Ekitiké came to Eintracht a year ago in very poor fitness – is definitely over.
Things have been relatively quiet in the transfer phase in the league so far – but not at St. Pauli. The club has already hit the market three times during the winter break and secured the services of Noah Weißhaupt, Abdoulie Ceesay and James Sands. While Ceesay and Sands do not yet have any Bundesliga experience, Weißhaupt should be a good reinforcement for the wing for the rest of the season. The loan from Freiburg could already be on the field against Eintracht and pose a task for the SGE defense with his dribbling strength.

Eintracht can’t have a remaining round? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! At least the signs are good for the first game of the new year. In the past seven years, Frankfurt have won the first game of the year in the Bundesliga five times. They would like to continue this tradition in Hesse this year – in order to then break the tradition of the mediocre second half of the season.
