A chilling new horror film dubbed the ‘scariest film of the decade’ is finally available to stream at home – if you dare.
Longlegs, directed by Osgood Perkins, follows FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) as she is assigned a serial killer case that spans decades.
The killer brutally annihilates entire families, but with a twist – it isn’t the slayer, who calls himself Longlegs (Nicolas Cage), that carries out the crimes, rather he somehow seems to convince the father of each family to do his bidding.
As Harker delves into the twisted, occult world of Longlegs, his true nature becomes a little too close to home for the detective.
Thanks to Neon’s cryptic marketing campaign, which saw horror fans deciphering a strange code to unveil the film’s title, anticipation was high for the Nicolas Cage-starring production.
And fans who never caught the spine-tingling horror during its cinema run can now stream it via Amazon Prime Video.
Longlegs currently sits at an 86% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with many lauding Cage’s terrifying performance as the titular killer as well as It Follows star Monroe for her portrayal of Agent Harker.
Mark Kermode dubbed the film ‘genuinely and properly upsetting,’ while The Australian said a ‘palpable fear’ runs through it.
YouTuber Perri Nemiroff added: ‘Longlegs’ unsolved serial killer case is hugely unnerving. And where things land? I’ve never seen anything quite like it.
‘Longlegs also continues to highlight that Maika Monroe is one of the very best horror headliners we have.’
NPR praised director Perkins, writing: ‘Part of what makes the film so effective is that it doesn’t really depend on secrets or surprises.
‘The writer and director Osgood Perkins summons an atmosphere of dread so intense, it’s practically spoiler-proof.’
The Wall Street Journal echoed a similar sentiment: ‘Writer-director Osgood Perkins has come up with something fresh, pungent and visceral. It’s easily the most effective work of horror I’ve seen this year.’
The Times promised Longlegs will give you a ‘bona fide case of the heeby-jeebies’, and The Daily Beast called it ‘a thriller that grows fouler and scarier with each step toward damnation.’
-SlashFilm thought it was the ‘most terrifying horror movie of 2024’, but Flickering Myth went a step further crowning Longlegs the ‘scariest movie of the decade.’
Speaking to Metrothe cast of Longlegs explained their reaction to seeing Cage in his terrifying costume – one that was kept from every trailer, poster, and social media post in the run-up to the film’s release.
‘I had no idea how scary it was going to be. I mean, it was so scary that you need a new word to describe what he looks like!’ Alicia Witt confessed.
‘It’s so twisted and certainly helped with my work because my interaction with him in the movie, all you have to do is look at him and you know that man’s not right – like, deeply not right.’
Monroe added: ‘Also, I think just beyond the prosthetics, he transforms his voice, his mannerisms – everything. And again, there was no part of Nic there. He wasn’t in the room.’
The Watcher star admitted she was ‘absolutely in awe’ of Cage’s unrecognisable performance, adding: ‘It was the most incredible thing to be sitting across from him in this particular role.’
Longlegs is available to stream now on Prime Video
