BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – First responders are urging everyone to stay home Friday and Saturday, if possible. Leaders from across Jefferson County have been meeting to discuss emergency response plans for these weather-related alerts.
The Fultondale and Birmingham fire departments are particularly concerned about accidents and hypothermia. They emphasize that these dangers can be avoided by staying indoors.
“If you’re out and get into a bad situation, we have to come out, which creates more problems. So I say don’t be a part of the problem; be a part of the solution,” says Lt. Williams from Birmingham Fire. “Don’t get out – stay home.”
Lt. Williams and Chief Justin McKenzie from Fultondale Fire advise everyone to avoid the roadways if conditions become icy.
“We’re going to come to get you, but it would be better if we could focus on real emergencies instead of tracking down people who didn’t need to be on the road,” says McKenzie.
Both departments have established plans for responding to emergencies safely if road conditions become hazardous.
“In Fultondale, we are going to take our brand-new trucks out of service and use some older equipment if the ice gets really bad. Regardless, we will respond,” says McKenzie.
-For BFRS, Lt. Williams explains that they have already discussed the weather event with their team.
“They know some personnel may struggle to arrive. Those who live farther away will come in early,” says Lt. Williams. “If we are short on staff, we have people who will stay over.”
