Nagpur: The samples of two city kids are now being sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune for whole genome sequencingthe results of which are likely to take a longer period.
The two kids had tested positive for the human metapneumonia virus (HMPV) at a private hospital lab, but the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) refused to accept the report. The civic body collected the samples for a confirmatory RT-PCR test from AIIMS-Nagpur’s Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL).
AIIMS officials were tight-lipped about the results of the RT-PCR test conducted on the two samples on Thursday after procuring singleplex kits from NIV Put. NMC officials also kept mum about the result.
Earlier, officials said that first, an RT-PCR test would confirm HMPV presence. If they test positive, the cycle threshold (CT) value will be collated. Samples would be sent for genome sequencing to NIV Pune only if their positive samples have a CT of less than 25. A CT value of less than 25 is indicative of a strong viral load.
A seven-year-old boy from Lakadganj zone and a 14-year-old girl from Dhantoli zone are suspected of contracting HMPV. The girl returned from Hyderabad, while the boy had no travel history. Both patients exhibited common symptoms such as fever, cold, and cough and were treated as outpatients and did not require hospitalisation. Currently, both patients have fully recovered.
