The future departure of Didier Deschamps from the Blues was mentioned by Éric Roy, who received the trophy for best coach in Ligue 1 at the end of the 2023-2024 season from the hands of the national coach.

Didier Deschamps has received numerous tributes since his confirmed decision to leave the Blues at the end of his contract, which will end in 2026. Since Wednesday, reactions have been pouring in and, this Thursday, before the weekend of the 17th day of Ligue 1 and the reception of OL by (Saturday 5 p.m.), it was Éric Roy who expressed his thoughts on the man who led the Blues to two titles during his tenure (World Cup 2018 and Nations League 2021).

“He will remain one of the greatest coaches we have had, whatever happens”

Last May, it was from the hands of Didier Deschamps that Roy received the trophy for best coach in Ligue 1 and he underlined – in comments reported by Ouest- – his strong esteem for him in front of the press. “I think it’s good for him, good for the preparation of the events that await him. He will remain one of the greatest coaches we have had, whatever happens. It is not yet his time say goodbye, he still has great things to do”, he assured, his mind undoubtedly turned towards the League of Nations (quarter-finals against Croatia in mid-March) and obviously the next 2026 World Cup which will be jointly organized by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“It will depend on Zinédine”

Recalling how much Didier Deschamps liked to control his timing, Roy thought that the decision was “the best” and assured support for the national coach, whose succession has continued to be talked about in recent hours. “A consequence for my possible extension at Brest? I don’t think so (laughs). It’s a succession that will be very easily made, I think there is a coach who is unanimous. It will depend on Zinédine ( Zidane, editor’s note)”, agreed a Roy who would therefore see the former coach of Real Madrid taking over from his former teammate with whom he was world champion in 1998 and Europe 2000.
