“We must stop exploiting freedom of expression”

Clara Chappaz, Minister Delegate for Artificial Intelligence and Digital, reacts to attacks from leaders of large American social networks who, like the founder of Meta (Facebook, Instagram), Mark Zuckerberg, and the owner of X, Elon Musk, accuse European laws of “censor” freedom of expression. It urges the European Commission to firmly apply European regulation of social networks – the Digital Services Act (DSA) -, while Meta announced, on Tuesday January 7, significant moderation changes and Mr. Musk is increasing the number of messages aimed to influence political decisions in the United Kingdom or in the European Union (EU), particularly in Germany: on Thursday January 9, he will speak on X with a leader of the German far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD ).

How do you judge the end of “fact checking” partnerships with the media, which was announced by Mr. Zuckerberg?

I immediately contacted Meta to get a number of answers. Meta is inspired here by a moderation functionality [les community notes, dans lesquelles la vérification d’une information est assurée par des internautes qui rédigent des commentaires] used today by other platforms, including X, and which is the subject of an investigation by the European Commission under the DSA regulation. We therefore have reason to be concerned.
