Last night saw Demi Moore take home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and while it’s always nice to see a deserving nominee take home such a prestigious award, Moore’s win for her role in Coralie Fargeat’s satirical body horror The Substance felt extra serendipitous.

Prior to her win, Moore also took to the stage with her The Substance co-star Margaret Qualley to present Best Male Actor in a Series, with the pair of them quipping about respecting the balance (thankfully, no MonstroElisaSue showed up to steal the limelight…)

In a moving speech as she accepted her statue, Moore spoke about how this is the first award she’s ever won in her over 40 years of acting in Hollywood, and that her career was almost derailed by a producer who dismissed her talents – an eerily similar situation to her role as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substancea ‘washed up’ actress desperate for another shot at fame:

Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress. At that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful and made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged and I bought in, and I believed that.

That corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it. Maybe I was complete, maybe I’d done what I was supposed to do.

Of course, as all good horror heads may already be aware, The Substance is not Moore’s first foray into the genre – one of her very first roles was in Charles Band’s 1982 sci fi horror Parasiteand, more famously, that’s her on the poster for Meir Zarchi’s controversial rape-revenge horror, I Spit On Your Grave from 1978. Yes, this one:

As the awards race heats up, Moore’s win at the Golden Globes definitely bodes well for her shots at an Academy Award, which would not only be a monumentous achievement for her as an actress, but for horror fans everywhere as, historically, the awards show has not exactly been forthcoming in recognizing the talented contributions of horror filmmakers and stars.

Congratulations to Demi and all of The Substance team – fingers crossed for that Oscar…
