Were the Three Wise Men really three? Melchior, Gaspard and Balthazar. According to traditions, these were scholars or astrologers guided by a star to Bethlehem. In the 3rd century, they were given royal status.

In the Middle Ages, people liked to say that Melchior, the oldest, represented Europe and brought gold, the symbol of royalty. Gaspard, often described as a young man, came from Asia and offered divine incense. Balthazar, of African origin, brought myrrh, used to embalm the dead. Historians do not all agree, versions have changed over time.

We will remember that the Three Wise Men are loaded with beliefs. According to the gospel, to join Jesus, they would have been guided by a bright star, often identified as the star of Bethlehem. This symbol remains a central element of Christmas decorations, which is very often found at the top of the Christmas tree.

And the king cake?

Epiphany highlights the universal aspect of the Christian faith but its origin is pagan, it dates back to the Roman Saturnalia, celebrated at the end of December. We then hid a bean in a pancake. The lucky winner was the king of the day. Over the ages, this tradition has been Christianized to honor the visit of the Three Wise Men.

Whatever the meaning, the pancake has become essential. According to bakery professionals, 60 million cakes are sold each year, all distribution channels combined. A real business that starts at the end of November and ends in February.

When it comes to pancakes, our country is divided into two: the north and the south. The France of frangipane and the France of brioche des rois. Who would be closest to the Three Wise Men? We wouldn't want to start a war but, as a small indication, the frangipane puff pastry only appeared in the 19th century.

For its part, the bean is the object of all desire, it is exchanged between fabophiles… Porcelain bean-shaped beans to recall its origins, religious figures, jewelry beans from great designers, there is no limit to creativity.
