Chris Sutton was forced into a “sobering” admission on Celtic after hearing one shock reveal to emerge from their Old Firm defeat to Rangers at Ibrox.
The defending Scottish champions endured a day to forget at the home of their closest rivals on Thursday (2 January), as they were deservedly beaten 3-0.
With very few players earning any sort of credit for Brendan Rodgers’ side from that game they were fortunate not to be beaten by a greater scoreline.
Indeed, that was perhaps best exemplified by one stat that highlight just how many chances Rangers were able to create against Celtic in the match.
Speaking on Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game (4:53pm) with 86 minutes on the clock, commentator Ian Crocker said: “This is some stat. Celtic have faced the most shots today in a Premiership game since records began. 24 today! Kilmarnock managed 18 earlier in the season.”
Those records began around decade ago, highlighting the extend of Rangers’ dominance, and responding to that, Sutton simply said of his old club: “Sobering afternoon for Celtic.”

Although there was still several minutes to be played at that point, Rangers did end the game having taken 24 shots (BBC Sport), allowing their visitors some respite in the final moments.
By that point though the damage had very much been done to ensure this was not a match anyone connected with the Parkhead club will want to remember.
Chris Sutton will not have enjoyed what he saw from Celtic vs Rangers
Football Insider Opinion
It is no surprise to see Sutton considerably underwhelmed by what happened during this Old Firm clash at Ibrox.
As a former Celtic player, the pundit has certainly enjoyed his fair share of digs at Rangers over the years amid their struggles in comparison to his old club.
Here though, it was a performance that provided him with no ammunition for any more of that, as he was instead forced to see his former team comfortably outplayed for the vast majority of this match.
The way that Brendan Rodgers’ side rolled over so badly may be a concern here, given it serves as a strong reminder they are far from invincible in the Scottish Premiership.
With an 11-point lead at the midway stage of the campaign Celtic are still very much in control in the title race in Scotland at this stage of the season.
Any more performances such as this though could give Rangers a glimmer of hope, and would generate plenty more concern for Sutton and other followers of the Bhoys.
