Bundesliga: Rights nightmare averted! Sender grabs important package

In the fight for the Bundesliga rights, Sport1 has to cope with a bitter defeat. RTL snatched the top second division game from him on Saturday evening – the specialty channel’s biggest ratings hit with sometimes over a million viewers.

Sport1 was all the more trembling about a second big decision. Without the rights to the Sunday highlights of the Bundesliga, the “double pass” would also have been threatened with extinction. Now came the relief. “Package K” apparently remains in the property of the provider.

Bundesliga rights: Sport1 retains important package

Sport1 is undergoing massive changes. In 2024, the station announced that it was aiming for comprehensive personnel and structural realignment. 50 percent of the station was sold to a Turkish media company, stations were scrapped or sold, many jobs were cut, and CEO Olaf Schröder and editor-in-chief Pit Gottschalk parted ways. And a lot of things changed in the program too.

But the quota makers remained the same. The second league Saturday evening game, created in 2021, proved to be a golden opportunity for the sports channel. Parallel to Sky, but on free TV, the top game regularly brought in amazing viewership numbers. But now the shock. The success of the rights package attracted larger providers, RTL snatched the package away from Sport1 (and Sky). Here are the details.

“Double pass rights” remain intact

This made the award of “Package K” all the more important for Sport1. In addition to the top game, the “Doppelpass” is the most famous and important program on the special interest channel. Without the rights to show the Bundesliga highlights on Sunday morning, the cult talk would also have been threatened with extinction. That would have been a huge blow for the beleaguered broadcaster.
