Last weekend, on the Italian side of Monte Rosa, a gigantic landslide occurred which significantly transformed the landscape.
As shown by the drone footage of the mountain rescuer Luca Tondatenormous masses of rock broke away in the southern area of Punta Dufour (4634 metres), rolling hundreds of meters downstream.
“This is a huge gap, still ongoing,” Tondat warned on his social channels. Fortunately, the landslide occurred at night, thus avoiding any casualties.
Recurring events
The cloud of dust caused by the collapse was so massive that it reached the ski slopes, leaving clear traces. Also the Zamboni-Zapp refugeaclosed during the winter, reported damage.
The affected area is currently accessible only at one’s own risk, Tondat explained, stressing that collapses could continue. The news was initially reported by «Il Dolomiti».
The landslide on Monte Rosa is not an isolated case. Already in the spring of 2024, the same massif had recorded a similar event. Similar events also occur on other Alpine peaks, often linked to the thawing of permafrost and the retreat of glaciers.
