New Year’s jumping in Garmisch – Deschwanden celebrates her podium debut on the tour – Sport
  • Gregor Deschwanden celebrates his first podium finish at the Four Hills Tournament at the New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER).
  • The Lucerne man only has to bow to the Austrian Daniel Tschofenig.
  • Behind three Austrians, Deschwanden is now in 4th place in the overall ranking.

Gregor Deschwanden’s great season has reached a new high point: at the New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the 33-year-old from Lucerne jumped onto the podium of the Four Hills Tournament for the first time in his career. As with his 2nd place in Wisla (POL), he only had to admit defeat to the Austrian Daniel Tschofenig at the foot of the Zugspitze.

After the first round, Deschwanden was in third place with a 138-meter jump. After Anze Lanisek (SLO)’s attempt, he was faced with a herculean task in the final round – which he mastered brilliantly. Like Lanisek, the Swiss jumped 140.5 meters and took the lead. Michael Hayböck (AUT), who set a new hill record with 145 meters in the first round, was then defeated by Deschwanden by 1.3 points.

Only Tschofenig jumped in a different league on New Year’s Day. With a 143-meter jump in the second round, he celebrated the clear victory with an 8-point lead, which also gave him the lead in the overall standings. Deschwanden has suddenly entered the race for the tour podium. He is currently in 4th place, 13.6 points behind Tschofenig.

Peier disappointed as 30th.

At the large Olympic ski jump in Garmisch, alongside figurehead Deschwanden, Killian Peier also qualified for the second round. However, this is only just. With a weak jump at the 117 meter mark, he benefited from the fact that his opponent Lovro Kos (SLO) landed after just 106 meters. Peier opened the final round and ended up 30th.

Felix Trunz narrowly missed the final round in 31st place and thus the first World Cup points of his career. Five lucky losers jumped better, although the Swiss sailed up to 130 m.

This is how it continues

After the two competitions in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the ski jumpers move to Innsbruck, where the third competition of the Four Hills Tournament will take place on Saturday from 1:30 p.m. (live on SRF two) on the legendary Bergiselschanze. The winner will be chosen on Monday in Bischofshofen (AUT).
