As previously reported, a yellow weather warning for wind was issued by the Met Office, which has been in place since 12.15am, and will last through to 3pm.

This warning is said to bring gusts of up to 75mph winds in coastal areas, according to the Met Office.

A flood alert has also been issued for the the west Dorset coastline by the Environment Agency, affecting areas of Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, West Bay, Bothenhampton, Burton Freshwater, Burton Bradstock, Cogden Beach, Chesil Beach, West Fleet, East Fleet and Chiswell.

On top of this, heavy rain is forecast until around 4pm today.

Issuing advice to people looking to stay safe on the when in coastal areas, a spokesperson for the Met Office said: ““The strongest winds are expected across coastal regions in the west and south of the warning area, where gusts of 65-75 mph are possible.”

• Check the forecasts and tides in your local area

• Beware of large waves, even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea

• Take care if walking near cliffs – know your route and keep dogs on a lead

• In an emergency 999 (UK) or 112 (Ireland) and ask for the Coastguard.”
