From squalls to rain and snow: a turbulent start to the year

New Year’s Eve is dry, cold and foggy and cloudy. In the north of Rhineland-Palatinate you can feel the foothills of the storm depression on the North Sea.

New Year’s Eve can be windy in parts of Rhineland-Palatinate. Stormy wind gusts of 60 to 70 km/h are possible in the Eifel, Hunsrück and Westerwald, according to a meteorologist from the ARD Weather Competence Center. You won’t notice much of it in the lower regions.

But it is particularly stormy in northern Germany. In Rhineland-Palatinate, the night of the New Year is more relaxed. However, the expert warns that you have to be careful with the expected wind speeds with New Year’s Eve rockets.

At lows between plus one and minus three degrees, there is a risk of slippery conditions in some areas due to freezing fog.

Very windy and slightly milder New Year’s Day

As New Year’s Day progresses, the wind will become noticeably stronger throughout Rhineland-Palatinate. There could be widespread gusts of 50 to 60 km/h even in low altitudes. Strong gusts of up to 100 km/h could occur on the mountains. It remains dry. Temperatures rise to two to six degrees.

Thursday: First heavy rain in the north, then snow

According to the expert, a cold front is approaching on Thursday night, initially bringing heavy rain and then cold air. During the day the rain from the north turns into snow in layers of 200 meters or more. A maximum snow cover of five centimeters is possible by Thursday evening.

Danger of slippery conditions again on Friday night

It will only get colder on the Rhine and towards the evening. In Mainz and other large cities, only a few flakes are to be expected, as it is already getting drier overall. However, it could be slippery on Friday night as the ground is wet from rain and snow.

When the air is cold, the sun will come out in Rhineland-Palatinate on Friday; Fog and high fog from the last days of the year would then be “blown away” by the cold front. There could still be a few snow showers in the Westerwald.
