New fatal avalanche in Savoie: a 44-year-old woman dies buried during an off-piste expedition

After a 14-year-old teenager on Wednesday, a 44-year-old woman died off-piste due to an avalanche in an area in Savoie.

An avalanche claimed a new victim in Savoie, Saturday December 28, 2024. In an off-piste area of the La Norma area, a 44-year-old woman was advancing with her companion who was on a snowboard and a friend on skis. The group of three was caught in the avalanche, the woman was unfortunately buried.

According to our colleagues from Bleu, emergency services were on site 15 minutes after receiving an avalanche alert. The helicopter dropped off a dog handler and three gendarmes before the arrival of several trackers. But it was too late for the 44-year-old woman.

The skier did not have an avalanche victim detector. It was only with the probe that she could be located at 1:15 p.m., an hour after the alert received by the emergency services. The 44-year-old woman was from Savoie.

The avalanche risk is very high

A call for caution is relaunched. To venture off-piste, an avalanche victim detector is essential in the event of an accident, as well as a shovel. A professional guide is also required to venture off the ski slopes. Even more so during this period when the snow cover is still unstable, and the risk of avalanches is very high throughout the Alps.

On Wednesday December 25, a 14-year-old teenager lost his life while going off-piste with members of his family in Arc 1 800, in Savoie.
