Serious falls in Bormio – cerebral hemorrhage: Sarrazin will be operated on on Friday – sport
  • The final training in Bormio was marred by several serious crashes.
  • The most prominent victim is last year’s winner Cyprien Sarrazin, who was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. He is under medical observation.
  • In addition to the Frenchman, Pietro Zazzi also has to be transported away by helicopter.

The French speed specialist Cyprien Sarrazin was blown off by a wave in the lower part of the icy “Stelvio” in Bormio and fell violently onto the slope with his back and head. After a long slide, the 30-year-old cut through the safety net with his skis and then came to a standstill.

Surgery on Friday

He was then rescued by helpers and transported away by helicopter. The French Ski Association announced in the afternoon that Sarrazin had suffered a subdural hematoma – a collection of blood between the meninges. He remains hospitalized in Italy for the time being and “under neurological intensive care”.

The medical community decided that Sarrazin would undergo surgery in Italy on Friday evening. During this procedure, a drain is placed to drain the blood. Before the operation, French team doctor Stéphane Bulle said that the 30-year-old was conscious.

Zazzi also falls badly

After training resumed, the Swiss Joshua Mettler and Pietro Zazzi also fell. While the Italian also had to be evacuated by helicopter, the St. Gallen driver drove to the finish line independently. As Swiss-Ski later announced, Mettler felt pain in his knee and traveled back to Switzerland for further examinations. For Zazzi, the season is over. The 30-year-old suffered a fracture of the tibia and fibula in his right leg.

Alexander with the best time

As a result, a number of drivers took risks. In view of the events, the training times achieved were only of limited significance.

Cameron Alexander was fastest. The Canadian was 58 hundredths ahead of Stefan Rogentin. When asked whether he felt comfortable, the 30-year-old from Graubünden said: “Comfortable would be an exaggeration, but I managed.”

No full throttle at Odermatt

Franjo von Allmen took 4th place, 0.98 seconds behind Alexander. Marco Kohler lost 1.14 seconds. Val Gardena winner Marco Odermatt (+1.55) was “only” the fourth best Swiss. The man from Nidwalden, who was particularly slow in the middle section, admitted that he had not taken the full risk.

Livio Hiltbrand and Alexis Monney, who came 3rd the day before, were far back in the rankings.
