What games could be in Squid Game season 3? Theories and explanation

Season 2 of Squid Game was released on Netflix, and is already teasing the continuation of Gi-hun’s adventures: what games could be revealed in season 3?

After the breathtaking success of Korean production in the world of streaming in 2021, it was without much surprise that we learned of Netflix’s decision to renew it. Its creator Hwang Dong-hyeok thus agreed to take up the pen again to transform what was to be a limited series into a trilogy, just to prolong the ordeal of his hero Gi-hun, despite being the great winner of the games.

The protagonist then returned to the island of the Rose Guards for a new edition as bloody as ever, in season 2 released on December 26, 2024 on the streaming platform. A new chapter, yes, but shorter than the previous one since it only offers seven episodes instead of nine, a number that the showrunner justifies by the ending climax requiring a break before moving on to the finale. Suffice to say that the teasing around the sequel is great, especially since many spectators are demanding more tests for the candidates: what games can we expect in season 3 of Squid Game ?

The squid game is not necessarily a must-have in Squid Game

You might think that the squid game is a staple of the games, but it is possible that the series ignores it, for several reasons.

First, in order to renew itself, the series could exclude the squid game from the panel of the next events. Because the game in question served above all to show the ultimate moral dilemma of the hero Gi-hun facing his childhood friend Sang-wooto conclude the story of the two characters: where the main character against his will became the big winner, Sang-woo turned towards redemption by refusing to win the winnings stained with the blood of his friends. To reuse the same test, it would then be necessary to find a new meaning for it, which would unfortunately risk distorting the purpose of the finale of the first season.

Secondly, we discovered through a dialogue in season 1 that the VIPs did not know the squid game: the Leader had to explain its complex rules to them, and specified in passing that it was a very famous activity in Korean children. Yet, the fact that the games’ most important customers have never heard of it even though they are presented as regulars, could mean that the squid will not necessarily make a return in season 3 of Squid Game. Especially since when Jun-ho discovers the lists of the previous editions in season 1, the last test is soberly titled “Round Six” – a name that echoes the original title of the series. In addition, we speak of the “Squid Games” to designate the entire competition, to emphasize its unique, risky and violent character, without meaning that the sixth game will necessarily be the Korean classic.

Finally, there remains a possibility that the cephalopod game returns with modificationsfor example by being played with several players, allowing several winners to leave by sharing the winnings. But one last hypothesis is that the games will stop avant the last testespecially if Gi-hun and Jun-ho manage to put an end to the competition.

The clues already mentioned in season 2 of Squid Game

Season 2 of Squid Game has already given hints of what awaits players in season 3, which will also be the finale of the Korean series.

Starting with the names of games that arise during certain discussions. Jung-bae thus mentions the squid game without even knowing that it is a classic of the competition, but also the “melted horse”.

The game in question is played in two teams: the members of the first group must launch and land astride the rump of an equine… which is in fact embodied by the players of the other team, and who must support the weight of their opponents.

Clues on the walls in season 2

As in season 1, Squid Game has fun revealing details on the walls of the candidates’ dormitory, hiding them behind the beds.

Because the most blatant clue for the next games is above all under the noses of the candidates – and the spectators – from the very beginning: in the large rest room, the white and black tiled walls display small scenes normally representing the trials to come.

We can thus clearly discern two motifs in season 2 of Squid Game : the first represents players hanging from the ceiling by their arms, some being in free fall. If Squid Game generally seeks to test ingenuity and empathy as much as strength in its games, it remains likely that contestants’ endurance will be tested in the future.

Another more cryptic pattern represents two mirrored checkerboards, with crosses located in the different squares – which are also too numerous for an equine board or a checkers board. Some theories about swords of Damocles falling from the ceiling are already circulating, while others see it as a simple distinction between players choosing between the circles and crosses camps. But it remains likely that such a motif signals one of the games to come in season 3 of Squid Game.

The post-credits scene from season 2 of Squid Game reveals several details of one of the games to come in season 3, and taking up the concept of one, two, three sun by reworking it.

We thus find the iconic doll of the series, but also her lover, as Hwang Dong-hyeok announced: a boy with the same design, but whose usefulness seems different, according to his gaze distinct from that of the girl and her cameras.

Another important point is the arrival of lights: if we can first think that it is a reference to the American name of the game 1, 2, 3, sun, “red light, green light” (literally “red light, green light“), it is also necessary to note all the details reminiscent of traffic lights and signs for trains. So it is very likely that the next game in season 3 of Squid Game includes railway tracks, and we can even imagine dilemmas: stay on the tracks or move, at the risk of alerting the doll? Or, can a train hide the candidates who would then be able to move without being spotted by the little girl’s detectors?
