Six out of the last seven days in central New York our high temperatures have been below freezing. It’s been a cold stretch to be fair, today we’ll finally break out of the spell and warm temperatures into the high 30s. Thankfully Syracuse will remain dry during the daytime hours, but some rain is headed our way overnight.
For some locations these rain showers will interact will relatively cold surface temperatures, which is the recipe for freezing rain. When water droplets fall through a shallow layer air that’s below freezing, it super-cools the water droplets. That super-cooled water droplet will then freeze to any surface it falls on. Which makes for icy roads and sidewalks.
The most likely areas to experience ice accumulations from a light glaze to one tenth of an inch are the southern hills and areas east of the I-81 corridor.
The Winter Weather Advisories run from midnight tonight through 11AM Saturday morning.
