  • Much of the West Coast will continue to see several days of rain or snow.
  • Rounds of rain and thunderstorms will dampen parts of the South.
  • That rain will eventually spread into the Midwest and East.

Whether you’re heading home or going somewhere fun to celebrate New Years Eve, the busy holiday travel period continues, and weather may be a factor. For some, snow, rain, fog, even a little ice could disrupt your plans.

Here’s what you need to know in order to make the safest trip possible.

Friday

  • South, Midwest: Rain and thunderstorms are expected in the Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, Great Lakes and Southeast Friday. Locally heavy downpours and wet roads appear to be the main travel concern for drivers in these areas.
  • Plains: Locally dense fog is possible across a broad swath of the Plains from Texas to the upper Midwest.
  • East: Rain will spread into the mid-Atlantic tonight. With some lingering cold air in place, parts of the Northeast from eastern Pennsylvania to upstate New York and southern New England may see some freezing rain Friday night.
  • West: As one system spreads rain and mountain snow from Washington, Oregon and Northern California into the Great Basin and Rockies, yet another system will arrive in the Northwest Friday night.
  • Potential airport weather delays: Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Minneapolis-St. Paul, San Francisco and Seattle
