François Bayrou's government was unveiled on Monday December 23. Manuel Valls, appointed Minister of Overseas Territories, justifies his return after several years spent far from France.
Barely named, the government of François Bayrou is already causing a lot of reaction. At issue: the presence of numerous former ministers such as Elisabeth Borne, Gérald Darmanin and Manuel Valls.
A surprise return that the former Prime Minister of François Hollande justified, Tuesday December 24, at the microphone of France Inter. “Me, I like challenges, I like taking risks”he said before adding: “I am here to take care of these overseas territories which need a fully committed government, a strong state and a republic everywhere.”
Concerning his legitimacy after several failures suffered during previous electoral events, Manuel Valls assures that his legitimacy comes from “his experience and his commitment.”
A government already on borrowed time?
These justifications come at a time when the appointment of François Bayrou's government has already been the subject of numerous criticisms, particularly on the left.
The National Rally expressed its disappointment through its president, Jordan Bardella, while La France Insoumise announced that it was going to table a motion of censure in order to once again overthrow the government.
In this regard, the new Overseas Minister warned of the risk of political chaos in the event of further censorship. “Do you think we can continue like this? Bring down the government? At a time when there is a war in Ukraine, with the economic and social risks that we know, the wave of anti-Semitism which overwhelmed the Western world after October 7, 2023, the emergency in Mayotte. Do you think we can continue to divide?“, said Manuel Valls.
