The 2-0 deficit against Union seemed to be the end of the match for Club Brugge on Sunday evening. But according to analyst Marc Degryse, Casper Nielsen's own goal was ultimately a 'blessing in disguise'.
“It forced Nicky Hayen to play all or nothing,” he explains in a column on HLN Sport. 'With two extra strikers, the dynamics of the match were completely changed.' According to Degryse, Hayen's tactical choices caused Union's defense, normally rock-solid, to falter.
'Mac Allister and Machida had to squeeze inside more, while the wingbacks suddenly had to think defensively. That led to chaos, leaving Talbi completely free at 2-1.' Degryse states that without that own goal, Hayen might not have dared to change so aggressively.
However, Union coach Pocognoli can also be proud, Gedryse emphasizes. 'Ivanovic's goal stood out. His speed and control in full running to beat Mignolet was pure class. Unfortunately for Union, Club Brugge had the last word with Nilsson's equalizer.'
