Snowfall in the Alps and strong gusts in the northwest are expected for Sunday. Seven departments have been placed on orange vigilance by Météo-France.
Seven territories on alert for Sunday, December 22. Météo-France has placed three departments on orange alert for “violent winds”. It will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the meteorological institute indicated on Saturday. The departments concerned are Côtes-d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine and La Manche.
“In the north-west quarter of the territory, behind the disturbance, the wind is strengthening under the showers with violent gusts on the Channel coasts on the fringes of the Enol depression”, warns Météo-France.
Three other departments are placed on orange “snow-ice” and “avalanche” vigilance on Sunday. These are Isère, Savoie and Haute-Savoie. “Heavy snowfall will fall in the northern Alps from the mid-mountains,” specifies the meteorological institute. Mid-morning, the Ain department was placed on orange “snow-ice” alert by Météo-France.
Other departments on orange alert?
Météo-France could extend this vigilance to other departments. Finistère, Calvados and Seine-Maritime “will be affected by violent and frequent gusts”. “A worsening of the level of vigilance for the violent wind parameter is not excluded for these departments”. Gusts of up to “120 km/h or even 130 km/h” are expected on Sunday in this part of France.
In its bulletin published mid-morning on Sunday, the meteorological institute specifies that several centimeters of snow have already been recorded in Chamonix (Haute-Savoie) and Bourg-Saint-Maurice (Savoie). Météo-France estimates that the risk of avalanche is “high”.
